Why is Veterinary Physiotherapy Beneficial?
Veterinary Physiotherapy is invaluable for animals, promoting rehabilitation, pain management, and injury prevention. Through targeted exercises and manual therapies, it aids in recovery from surgeries or injuries, restoring mobility and function. This specialized care is particularly beneficial for ageing pets, working animals, and those with chronic conditions. Vet physio enhances overall fitness, contributing to a higher quality of life by addressing musculoskeletal and neurological issues. It complements traditional veterinary treatments, providing a holistic approach to ensure the well-being of our four-legged friends.

Veterinary Physiotherapy:
Some things you should know...
1: Veterinary Referral
The Veterinary Surgeons Act of 1966 and The Veterinary Surgery (Exemptions) Order 2015, stipulate that for physiotherapy to be undertaken on an animal, consent must be obtained from the animal's treating veterinary surgeon. A veterinary referral doesn't cost anything but ensures that your vet, who is responsible for the overall health and well-being of your animal, is informed and in agreement with any additional treatments, including veterinary physiotherapy, that may be administered. Obtaining consent from the veterinary surgeon is a fundamental part of the legal and ethical framework that governs the practice of veterinary physiotherapy and helps to maintain the highest standards of care and accountability for the animal's health.

Following a revision of the legislation, it is no longer mandatory to obtain a veterinary referral for maintenance purposes.
Veterinary physiotherapy is a growing field focused on enhancing animal health and mobility through targeted therapeutic techniques. As an evolving discipline, its regulation is essential to ensure that practitioners meet high standards of care and ethics. In the UK, the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP) is one of the primary accrediting bodies, dedicated to upholding professional standards and ensuring that practitioners are skilled, knowledgeable, and adhere to evidence-based practices. Caileigh Eddie, founder of The Veterinary Physiotherapy company, is fully accredited by the NAVP, reflecting her commitment to these rigorous standards and providing clients with confidence in her expertise and dedication to animal welfare.
2: Regulation
3: Diverse Application
Veterinary physiotherapy is a specialised field that focuses on rehabilitating animals, improving their physical well-being, and helping them recover from injuries, surgeries, and chronic conditions. It is applied in various areas, including musculoskeletal rehabilitation (e.g., orthopedic conditions), neurological rehabilitation (e.g., spinal injuries), and cardiovascular and respiratory rehabilitation, with the aim of reducing pain, enhancing mobility, and improving overall health.
4: One size does not fit all
Veterinary physiotherapy recognizes the absence of a one-size-fits-all approach to animal treatment and recovery. Factors like the nature of the condition, overall health, and individual response make it challenging to provide precise recovery timelines. Collaborating closely with veterinary surgeons, physiotherapists create tailored treatment plans that incorporate diverse techniques like exercises, hydrotherapy, manual therapy, and specialized modalities to address unique needs, enhance mobility, relieve pain, and improve well-being, ensuring a personalised and effective approach that optimizes each animal's chances for a successful recovery and fulfilment of rehabilitation goals.
